Microdermabrasion Uses and Benefits

Microdermabrasion is a method of mechanical exfoliation to help clear away dull skin buildup while simultaneously stimulating new cell growth. Microdermabrasion uses  crystals or diamonds to lightly resurface the skin leaving it smoother and glowing as the fresh skin underneath is revealed and reflects light. This mechanical exfoliation can be done as a stand alone treatment or combined with a chemical exfoliant. When microdermabrasion is done before a peel or enzyme treatment, ingredients can be delivered deeper into the skin and it is a great way to deliver lighteners and to correct texture issues. When microdermabrasion is done after chemical exfoliating, the skin is softened, more polished and it helps to disimpact pores and relieve congested skin releasing trapped oils. You and your skin therapist will discuss your skin care goals, and your skin type and condition will help determine what type of chemical and mechanical exfoliating is right for you.

Both crystal and diamond microdermabrasion have different benefits and can target specific issues. Crystals have been the most commonly used. Tiny crystals are sprayed onto the skin to gently abrade it and at the same time a vaccum is used to remove both the crystals and dead skin. Crystals are not the best choice for rosacea or any inflamed skin and cannot be used around the eyes and mouth because of the way the crystals are sprayed. It is a good option however for treating pitted scarring and irregular skin texture as the spray can work in the divets and hard to reach areas.

The newest form of microdermabrasion is non-crystal or diamond tipped. Diamonds are harder than crystals and can remove up to 80% of the outer dead layer of skin. Diamond tips also have a vacuum but do not cause the inflammation that crystal can making it a better choice for mild inflamed acne and sensitive skin. It can also be used around the mouth and eyes to stimulate cell repair and collagen growth for antiaging benefits.

Citrus Skin studio also offers dermafile treatments. A steel and diamond tipped wand is used with out suction to manually exfoliate and polish and are an effective and safe choice for sensitive skin and rosacea.
